There were a few of them actually. The very first, was a professional racket restringing service. You know, for tennis and badminton rackets. It was at the age of around 19. The second business, which was a larger business – I set up my own brand of badminton equipment. I designed badminton rackets and shuttlecocks, and imported and distributed this equipment in the UK. In the peak time for this business, we were the official suppliers to the European Championships. We were doing very well - we were the second largest brand in the UK at that time. I sold this business to a competitor. By this time, I was around the age of 32. I then set up a property development business, where I bought properties which were in need of repair and I started to develop them. Developing properties led on to Husky Heat Pumps – so, that’s my business project history!
When I was in my previous business, that is developing properties, I already had an interest in renewable energy, such as solar and wind power. On one occasion, British Gas tried to charge a lot of money to install gas into two houses that I was building. And I thought: “I don’t want to pay this.” And I looked on the Internet and I began to learn about heat pumps. I bought two heat pumps and I installed them. And I fell in love with them. So then I did a little bit of research and found certain things, which I believed, didn’t make sense in the industry. At this point, my idea to set up my own business began.
Hmm, the funny thing is, I would say that they are struggling to keep pace with us. Why is this the case? Well, the first thing is that, because I design heat pumps. Every day I go back home to heat pumps. Every day I work with heat pumps. Even when I go to visit my mum, there is a heat pump. And I live with a heat pump. And as such, I can understand it in a lot more real-life situations. By understanding it in a real-life situation, I can adapt the software according to what I see. And this is not just by instinct, it’s by mathematics. And regarding the competitors, they have more laboratory testing procedures, and so their experience in real life is pretty limited. Thus, they are not able to extrapolate the potential from the heat pump as effectively as Husky can.
The answer to that would be – we would like to, but the timing has to be right. It means that business should be in such a position, whereby moving into the international market is done without any potential issues, in regards to how they are installed or in regards to the differences in localised weather in a variety of climates.
The paramount concern is to maintain the ethics of a small business in a bigger business. So, what I’m finding is that the ethics we had in the early days, can be a bigger challenge to maintain with the growth of the business. So, my biggest concern, and my biggest efforts, are to keep those ethics or those philosophies that make the customer experience and heat pumps work in all cases.
Generally, all our projects are pilots – they are real-life situations. So, that is probably the difference when Husky enters an award. Our philosophy here remains the same – let’s see what the results are like. In answer to the question I would say that we are entering new awards soon. So, we just need to look at the whole host of installations that we have done over the last twelve months and choose.

Well, first of all, our customer comes first. As for me, our customers should know that Husky is an efficient and reliable system. Whether they have a problem, the most important thing for us is to troubleshoot it as quickly as possible. My philosophy in this is a principle of efficiency. You know, whenever I put a heat pump in somebody’s home or commercial building, I need to know it’s going to perform exactly as we state. And, surrounding this one principle, there are probably four or five minor principles we adhere to, in order for that to happen.
That’s an interesting question! My life philosophy is to always look back and say: “I tried and I did it. Or I failed”. I need to have one of the results, but I must have tried. If I at least tried I will always be happy.
I would say – listen to your own heart and your own instinct. More than advice of other people. Of course, listen to people with the experience, but you have to honour your own instincts. Whether it can lead you to a mistake or not, it doesn’t matter – it’s you. Once you’ve done that, then follows hard work. You have to work extremely hard and be prepared to work hard. If you are working hard and following your instincts, the hard work becomes easier and, as such, the potential for success is more likely.
